There are two main categories of body temperature regulation methods that most animals fall under – cold-blooded and warm-blooded. All reptiles are cold-blooded, which means that reptiles cannot regulate their own body temperatures as warm-blooded animals, such as mammals, can. Humans, for example, have an average body temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit which our bodies maintain at all times. Some people have an average body temperature that falls a degree or two above or below this average, but whatever your personal average body temperature happens to be is the temperature that your body remains at most of the time unless you are sick or stuck in extreme temperatures. If our body temperature rises above or dips below this very precise temperature even slightly, you are at risk for bodily harm. Reptiles, on the other hand, have very little control over the internal regulation of their body temperature. This means that reptiles rely on a process called thermoregulation to keep their bodies at the correct temperatures. If a reptile gets too cold, it must rely on the heat of the sun, or in the case of your exotic pet reptiles, a heating rock or lamp, to keep itself warm and keep its body systems functioning properly. If the animal gets too hot, it will search for a shady area or a cool water source in order to bring its body temperature down to the correct levels.

Because of the unique way that reptiles must manually regulate their body temperatures, it is extremely important for the owners of exotic pet reptiles to have the proper setup for their animals. This may include heating rocks or lamps, a source of cool, clean water, and an area where your exotic pet reptiles can find shade and privacy. Reptiles are ancient and extremely interesting animals. Their body functions are unique and much different from animals such as birds and mammals. Many reptiles have changed very little since they first evolved, and some of these animals have remained relatively the same for millions of years. Some of the snakes, lizards, and crocodilians that are around today would have been easily recognizable to us even during the time of the dinosaurs. They certainly make fascinating and noteworthy pets, and more people now than ever are choosing scaly companions over more traditional pets such as hamsters and guinea pigs.
